New Garage Design Ideas

March 2021 to March 2022 saw the highest rise to house prices since 2004, growing on average by a whopping 14.3%. The coronavirus pandemic has seen the price of an average UK house rise a fifth higher than pre-pandemic levels. With the price of the average UK home now at £265,312. At that price, if you aren’t putting your garage to good use then you are definitely doing yourself a disservice. Before you say it – no, you won’t need that old chest of draws again! It’s time to clear out the clutter and get the most out of your garage.

Research suggests that a garage can add as much as 5% to the value of a property. You’ll maximise that amount by having a high-quality garage, flexible in how it can be used. Let’s take a deep dive into some of the ways you can best make use of your garage space at home!

Garage Gym

Let’s face it, it’s difficult enough to drag yourself to the gym as it is. So, if you are into your fitness and your garage is in dire need of reincarnation, why not convert your garage into a home gym? A home gym is a fantastic use of your garage. It provides you and your family with a private space to burn those BBQ induced calories! There are many other benefits too, such as controlling the gym soundtrack. That’s not to mention post-workout showers in your own home and not having to wait for someone to finish their 15th set of bench press whilst you watch the clock tick by.

Despite common perception, a garage gym doesn’t have to cost the earth and can be done on a budget. If the idea of a home gym has piqued your interest, great! But don’t start daydreaming about looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger just yet. First, let’s discuss what you need from your garage to convert it into a home gym.

Waterproofing

One of the necessary prerequisites to turning your garage into a home gym is waterproofing. No one likes working out in the rain, so it’s important you have a dry and well protected space that will last. Most gym equipment is made of aluminium or metal alloy, which will rust if exposed to moisture. If you’re spending your hard-earned money on gym equipment, you definitely want it to last! Not to mention, waterproofing will ensure that your garage gym is free from damp and smelling fresh.

Garage side door

In terms of doors, a side-hinged garage doors can be perfect for allowing ventilation into the garage without having the whole street watch you do your bicep curls. At VSF we have a number of options to choose from which are lightweight and come within a steel sub chassis to ensure security to your garage.

Ultimate DIY Workshop

So, you might use your garage as a workshop on an occasion but are you really making the most of it? Let’s have a look at how to transform your garage into the ultimate DIY workshop.

Storage and workbench

After you’ve cleared out your garage, which is essential for both space and for safety concerns, you’re going to need to consider what you’re doing in your garage. This will dictate how big a bench you’re going to need. You should always consider the space you have to work on that bench though. A large workbench isn’t any good if you struggle to work on it.

Now you might be tempted to leave your tools on your workbench, but often it’s not advisable. Doing this can clutter your workspace and if you haven’t got a garage with good quality waterproofing then it can mean that your tools go rusty.

Waterproofing

Waterproofing is just as essential for your workshop as it is for your gym, there’s not much we can say we haven’t already said: if you don’t want your equipment rusting, whether that’s a dumbbell or a saw.

Garage side door

In terms of doors, a side-hinged garage doors can be perfect for allowing ventilation into the garage. At VSF we have a number of options to choose from.

Art studio

So, maybe a garage gym or workshop isn’t what you’re looking for. Maybe you’re the artistic type and you’ve always wanted a specific space to dedicate to this. Well, why not turn your garage into your dream art studio.

Natural lighting

Many painters prefer to paint by natural light for a number of reasons and this can be achieved in your garage through a window. If you have no good place for windows, a garage side door can work to. Whilst a window is obviously the superior choice, if your garage hasn’t got a window then making sure you have a garage side door you can open means that you don’t have to open your main garage door onto your street. In other words, you get to keep your privacy.

Waterproofing, ventilation and insulation

There’s not much to add that we didn’t mention in the section on a new garage workshop above, but it goes without saying that a waterproof garage, with good condensation control, ventilation and insulation is essential for your art studio. It ensures your work doesn’t get ruined, whilst also keeping your working environment the way it should be.
